Web Factory Reference Manual

File Menu

New...
Displays the New box, which allows you to create a new file of one of the following types:
Web Page
Displays an empty "preview" window, which allows you to type the text of your Web page and insert elements such as hypertext links, images, and so forth. The preview window is what we call "WYSIWYG" or What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. That is, what you see as you create a Web page in Web Factory is what you will get when the page is actually displayed in a Web browser--with no HTML tags to be seen. Web Factory will preview the page according to how Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer will display the page. Web Factory defaults to the Netscape Navigator preview, but you can change the default.
Related Topics:
To change the default of which browser to preview, see File menu, Preferences.
To select a different browser preview for the current file, seeView menu, View as (Browser Name).
To see or edit the HTML source, see View menu, View HTML Source.
To get help with creating a Web page, see the Getting Started section of this manual.

Frame Page...
Displays the New Frame Page box, which allows you to select an initial frame layout from the provided designs of two frames or three frames. Click the layout design you want.

If you are working in a Navigator preview window, Web Factory displays the frame layout you selected. You can alter the design, if desired (see Related Topics, below). You then need to assign a Web page to be displayed in each frame. Do this by clicking inside the frame and selecting to insert "A link to another Web page". Web Factory displays the Link to another Web Page box, allowing you to select the page that will appear in this frame. After you click OK, the URL of the page you selected appears in the frame. The assigned Web pages will not display in this window. You must view the frame page in the Test View to see the results.

If you are working in an Internet Explorer preview window, the frame layout will not appear, since Internet Explorer version 2.x does not support frames. Any text or images you insert into this preview window will appear in lieu of frames when the document is viewed in Internet Explorer or other browsers that do not support frames.

Related Topics:
To modify the selected frame design, see Frames menu.
To see Web pages displayed inside the frames, see View menu, Test View.

Image...
Displays the New Image Resolution box, which allows you to determine the size and background color of the new image. Web Factory defaults to a 640 x 480 size window (that is, 640 pixels across by 480 pixels down) with a background color of black. You can change the size by typing in new dimensions in the Width and Height boxes. You can change the color by clicking in the color box and selecting a different color from the Color Picker box that appears.

After you have selected the size and background color of the new image and clicked OK, an empty window of the selected size and background color appears on the screen, and all of the image-editing menus and tools become available. You can now draw on the new image, load objects into the new image window, or cut and paste parts of another image into the window.

Related Topics:

Save As...
Displays the Save As box, which allows you to save the current file to a new file name, file type, or location. Web Factory allows you to save files in any of the following file types (formats):
File FormatDescription
*.htm, *.htmlPlain text files saved to these file formats are considered "Web pages". They can be viewed in any Web browser and edited and saved in Web Factory.
*.bmp, *.eps, *.pcx, *.tga, *.tiffWeb Factory allows you to edit and save image files to any of these formats. However, Web browsers do not support these file formats.
*.gif, interlaced *.gif, *.jpgImage files in these formats are accepted by most image-capable Web browsers. Web Factory allows you to save image files to these formats. The *.jpg format allows you to select the level at which to compress the file. This reduces the file size (number of kilobytes), but can also reduce quality. Interlaced .gif files load more gradually on the Web page than standard gif files, increasing the level of detail with each pass.

Preferences...
Preferences will vary based on the current file being viewed:

The following preferences are available when the current file is in a preview window. They are not available when previewing frames in Navigator.

Displays the Preferences box, which allows you to customize Web Factory to your liking by changing any of the following options:
PreferenceDescription
Cursor color if a background image is usedWhen an image is tiled across the Web page background, the effect can be beautiful, but it can be difficult to see the standard black text cursor. Web Factory allows you to choose the color of the cursor to improve its visibility. This setting is applied during the current work session only.
Default Preview BrowserAs you work in Web Factory, you preview your Web page as it will look in the Netscape Navigator browser or Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. In this preference, you can choose which browser preview your files will automatically open into. It also allows you to let Web Factory decide which browser preview is best for each file, based on any browser-specific tags (that is, tags supported by only one browser or the other) it finds when validating your files upon opening.
On inserting HTML elementsA number of HTML elements (such as lists, horizontal rules, and more) provide options for customizing their look. In this preference, you can choose whether you want Web Factory to display the Properties box for these elements each time you insert them, so you can customize their look; or whether you want Web Factory to automatically insert the element using the default settings. (If you choose to insert with default settings, you can always edit the Properties later by right-clicking on the element and selecting properties from the pop up menu, or by selecting the element and choosing Properties from the Edit menu.)
Validate files on openingThis option tells Web Factory to automatically validate the HTML of any *.htm or *.html file when it is opened in Web Factory. Web Factory will inform you if any errors or unrecognized tags are found. For more information on this process, see Edit menu, Validate HTML.
